Lily Garden Bed & Breakfast Welcomes Kansas City Photographer on Her #AmtrakTakeMeThere Adventure

Imagine getting to ride the rails as an Amtrak ambassador, showing off how train travel can benefit someone living your specific lifestyle. That’s what Kansas City, Kansas photographer Kim Horgan did when she won the Amtrak #TakeMeThere contest in April 2019—and her adventure brought her all the way to Lily Garden Bed & Breakfast in Harpers Ferry, WV!

Horgan has made a name for herself on Instagram, advocating for the pleasures of women taking solo vacations or adventures. She chose Harpers Ferry in order to ride her bike through the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Trail, which winds past the town and makes for a great solo ride.

Riding Amtrak with a bike

While many adventurers might not consider taking their bikes on cross-country vacations, Horgan found that Amtrak made it easy. In fact, the relaxed tempo of the trip echoed that of her bike rides, and allowed her to explore the country from a different vantage point.

In a recent interview, Horgan described the slower travel method as being great for clearing her head. Since riders know the trip will take far longer than traveling by plane or car, there’s no particular hurry. This allowed her to watch the countryside go by, enjoying stops in small-town America and the opportunity to take plenty of photos.

Advocating for solo adventures

Traveling alone can be a daunting prospect for many women, but Horgan aims to document her successes as well as her mishaps. Her goal is to explore new areas off the beaten path and take beautiful photos, while showing solo women travelers that their experience can echo her own.

She knows it’s not a completely safe method of travel (arguably, anyone can run into travel problems, whether male, female, alone or partnered), but she takes the opportunity to do it anyway. Horgan describes her adventures alone as peaceful, helping her clear her head and get away from the stress of everyday life.

Harpers Ferry is your adventure destination

It’s easy to see why Harpers Ferry caught Horgan’s eye. Located in the Appalachian Mountains, it boasts spectacular views, gorgeous fall foliage and a quaint downtown area with museums, historical sites and more. The C&O Canal Trail offers over 70 miles of beautiful, Instagram-worthy scenery along the Potomac River. Whether you bike the entire trail or strike out for the day, you’ll love the peaceful ride.
