At Lily Garden Bed & Breakfast, we’re excited to share the ongoing preservation journey of Armory Dwelling House #24 (ADH24) here in Harpers Ferry, WV. This historic property, dating from 1810-1838, is a rare example of early American architecture with ties to the 2nd US National Armory, and it represents a window into the abolition movement. The nonprofit People Tree Ministerial Services was awarded a prestigious Save America’s Treasures grant from the National Park Service, Historic Preservation Fund, to partially fund preservation and historical research. Our goal is to preserve its original integrity while uncovering the treasured stories it holds. Join us as we delve into the architectural, historical, and cultural significance of ADH24 and invite you to share your thoughts on our preservation efforts.
1. Preservation Efforts: Craftsmanship & Authenticity
Our preservation team is working diligently to restore and maintain the architectural integrity of ADH24, focusing on both exterior and interior features that make it a historic gem. Key elements include:
- Brick Masonry & Fieldstone Foundations: The structure’s load-bearing brick walls and fieldstone foundations are carefully repointed with historically appropriate materials to match the original appearance and durability. We are also replacing deteriorated sections to ensure safety and longevity.
- Gallery Porch & Original Doors: The second-floor Gallery Porch remains a standout feature, with screened sections restored to mirror its early 1900s appearance.
- Unique Roof Structure: We are restoring the building’s roof, which will preserve the attic space and protect from moisture.
- Windows & Flooring: Each 2-over-2 and 6-over-6 double-hung sash window is being restored to working order. Inside, original wood flooring is being carefully refinished to retain the authentic charm of the building.
The restoration honors ADH24’s historic roots and follows historic preservation activities with some modern updates to secure the future of this remarkable piece of history.
2. Historical Documentation Research: Tracing the Past
Researching historical records has been instrumental in painting a fuller picture of ADH24’s origins and significance. Our work includes:
- Armory Documentation: As a dwelling related to the 2nd US National Armory, ADH24 played a role in supporting one of the country’s earliest federal arsenals. Research in the National Archives, regional history records, and state archives has uncovered documents linking ADH24 to armory staff who worked to support national defense initiatives during the early 1800s.
- Significant Historical Figures: The property’s connections to figures who advocated for abolition and equality are woven into the broader history of Harpers Ferry. Notably, the historical armory site and properties like ADH24 held ties to individuals whose lives represent stories about the struggles for freedom of their times, which we’re documenting to share their stories and bring them into public awareness.
- Publications & Archival Records: Detailed studies in works like History of the Armory Houses by Charles Snell have been invaluable, providing insights into ADH24’s layout, changes over time, and the lives of those who once called it home.
This historical research reinforces our commitment to preserving ADH24 as an educational resource and a testament to its era.
3. Archeological Discoveries: Uncovering Physical History
Archeological investigations at ADH24 have opened new avenues of discovery, revealing physical evidence of its storied past:
- Historic Artifacts: During the initial restoration, remnants from the Civil War era were found in a time capsule, including an Infantry Manual dated 1862, an ink well set, and pieces of leather. Each item adds depth to our understanding of the property’s history and its inhabitants.
- Underground Cistern: Another in-tact feature is a large underground masonry cistern that once held rainwater for cooking. Oral histories suggest that the property may have provided safe refuge on the Underground Railroad, sheltering freedom seekers on their journey northward.
Archeological research has expanded our understanding of ADH24, allowing us to honor its legacy in new ways.
4. Underground Railroad Significance: A Hidden Legacy
ADH24’s potential role in the Underground Railroad is both fascinating and humbling, as we work to preserve this aspect of its history for future generations.
- Historical Context: As one of the few remaining structures from the Armory District, ADH24 may have housed those aiding freedom seekers. Records indicate that Harpers Ferry served as a hub of abolitionist activity.
- Community Outreach: To honor this heritage, we’re partnering with local and national organizations to nominate ADH24 for the Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. We aim to create a narrative that highlights the courageous efforts of those involved in abolition and offer educational resources that bring this history to life.
- Visitor Education: In the future, interpretive signage, online resources, and guided tours will help share ADH24’s Underground Railroad legacy. This part of the preservation project is essential to begin telling stories of our cultural ancestors, as it connects visitors to the enduring fight for freedom and equality.
Through these efforts, we’re dedicated to sharing ADH24’s potential role with the Underground Railroad Network to Freedom (https://www.nps.gov/orgs/1205/index.htm).
5. Relation to the US Constitution: Bridging History and Education
ADH24’s history is closely tied to the constitutional era, offering unique insights into early American values and the lives of those impacted by them.
- Constitutional Era Connections: As a structure built during the early years of the nation, ADH24 reflects the architectural and social climate of the time. It serves as a reminder of the promises and struggles rooted in the US Constitution, from national defense to the inalienable rights that fueled the abolitionist cause. The accession of West Virginia as a State in the Union with its State Constitution may have given President Lincoln a footing for the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution.
- Educational Value: Visitors interested in early American history will find ADH24 an engaging entry point into the era of the US Constitution. Our interpretive programming will explore the values enshrined in this period, such as the drive for justice and equality, which motivated those connected to this property.
- Community Engagement: By preserving ADH24, we are creating a space where people can reflect on the ideals that shaped the United States, the stories of its people, struggles for freedom, and the eternal path toward freedom for all. Our vision is for ADH24 to serve as both a historical monument and a catalyst for ongoing dialogue about the Constitution, rights, and the values it represents.
ADH24’s connection to the constitutional era provides a meaningful foundation for understanding the property’s role in history and inspiring reflection on the principles that continue to shape our society.
As we undertake this restoration journey, we invite community members, historians, preservationists, and visitors to engage with us in safeguarding ADH24. Our mission is to honor this historic property’s architectural integrity and tell its stories about the enduring struggles for freedom. Our hope is to establish to place where people begin to better understand the struggles that people endured to provide the freedoms and rights that we cherish. Together, we can ensure that Armory Dwelling House #24 remains a vital part of Harpers Ferry’s historical fabric, educating and inspiring generations to come.
